What to do in case of a dental emergency

If you’ve suffered a dental trauma or are experiencing a dental emergency, here’s what you can do before you get to the dentist.

Toothache

Some toothache can be caused by debris caught in the area, causing alignment problems and pain, so carefully floss and brush your tooth to remove anything that may be stuck there. This may be all that is required. Take over-the-counter painkillers, but note that extreme nerve pain may require stronger pain relief. Apply a cold compress to the external part of the mouth to minimise pain and swelling. If your pain does not go away, call a dental clinic.

Partially knocked out tooth

If you’ve suffered a dental trauma and your tooth has become loose, call our dental clinic ASAP. A partially dislodged tooth can be painful, so take over-the-counter analgesics such as paracetamol (Panadol) or Ibuprofen while you’re waiting for your dental appointment.

Gum abscess (dental abscess)

If your gums are swelling or infected, take over-the-counter pain relief. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the mouth to reduce pain and inflammation. Contact the dentist and arrange an appointment ASAP as an absence is the sign of a serious infection which can damage your tooth and surrounding tissues and teeth.

Wisdom tooth pain

Regularly rinse your mouth was saltwater and take over-the-counter painkillers until you can see the dentist. You may also apply a cold compress to reduce pain and inflammation. Wisdom tooth pain is a sign that you will need your wisdom teeth extracted, and you will need to discuss these with your dentist.

Broken dentures

Do not try to repair your dentures as this could damage the dentures further and make repairs more costly. Carefully wrap the broken denture in a handkerchief or place it in a container and bring it in for repair. We’ll try to repair your denture on the day.

Knocked out tooth (dental avulsion)

If you’ve knocked your tooth out, try to find the tooth. If the tooth is dirty, very gently rinse the debris off the tooth. Do not remove any tissue that may be attached to the root of the tooth. Try to place the tooth back into the socket gently. Hold it in place with your fingers and call the dentist ASAP. If this is not possible, put the tooth in a small jar of saltwater solution or milk. Get to the dentist quickly. IMPORTANT: Act fast. Teeth have a better chance of surviving if they are placed back in the socket within the first hour after the incident.

Broken tooth

Gently rinse the area with water. To relieve any swelling, apply a cold compress to the outside of your mouth. Call our dental clinic ASAP. NB: A chipped or broken tooth exposes your tooth to damaging bacteria, increasing the chances of infection or decay, so you must see a dentist ASAP.

Trauma or cut to inner cheek/lips/gums

If your dental trauma is significant, you should head to the nearest emergency hospital. You can gently rinse the inside the mouth with salty water, then to stop bleeding, apply a gauze compress to the injured area. Keep applying pressure to the compress area for at least 20 minutes. You can also apply a cold compress to the outer part of the face to prevent excessive bleeding and minimise pain and inflammation.

Dislodged filling or crown

You must see your dentist ASAP as a dislodged filling or crown can make your tooth vulnerable to bacteria and infection. In the interim, you can purchase some temporarily dental cement from your local chemist; however, do not use any other material. If you have dislodged a crown, apply clove oil onto the area to relieve pain.
